Where To Find Alternative Fuel In Florida
LAKELAND -- The Gulf oil crisis has led to a renewed push towards alternative fuels, including ethanol.
One gas station in Polk County has become one of just a handful in all of Florida that sells E-85, an ethanol fuel made from corn and other crops.
E-85 is cheaper than regular gas, but only special, “flex-fuel” vehicles are able to use it.
The alternative fuel also gets less gas mileage, but supporters still said it’s worth it.
“It reduces our country’s dependence on foreign oil, which we hope in the future will drive oil prices down,” said dave Ricketts, president of FleetWing Corp., in Lakeland.
The only other public station in Central Florida that sells full ethanol gas is at the Turkey Lake Service Plaza, on Florida’s Turnpike.
There are also private, government-owned ethanol fueling stations at the Kennedy Space Center and Patrick Air Force Base.
